Dairy Processing Facility
Project Details
Alta EI collaborated with a leading dairy cooperative to support the safe operation and regulatory compliance of its ammonia refrigeration system through the development and implementation of a comprehensive Lock Out, Tag Out, Try Out (LOTOTO) program. Alta EI’s Environmental, Safety, and Sustainability Department provided end-to-end technical and safety support to enhance system reliability, reduce risk, and align operations with applicable federal safety regulations.
Project services included a detailed assessment of the facility’s ammonia refrigeration system to identify potential safety hazards, operational risks, and compliance gaps. Based on this assessment, Alta EI developed Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for approximately 100 individual pieces of equipment, providing clear, consistent guidance for normal operations, maintenance activities, and emergency response scenarios. LOTOTO procedures were then established and integrated to ensure proper isolation of hazardous energy sources during servicing and maintenance activities.
All work was performed in accordance with Process Safety Management (PSM) and Risk Management Plan (RMP) regulatory requirements, ensuring alignment with OSHA and EPA safety standards. Through close collaboration with facility personnel, Alta EI delivered a practical, site-specific safety framework that improved operational consistency, strengthened employee protection, and supported long-term regulatory compliance. The result was a safer, more efficient refrigeration system with clearly defined procedures and enhanced risk controls.
