Construction Materials Testing

Collaboration
ALTA EI collaborates closely with architects, engineers, owners, general contractors, and other personnel throughout each phase to verify that construction materials comply with project specifications. Ensuring the proper selection, quality, and workmanship of materials is crucial for long-term performance standards of buildings and infrastructure.
Cost Savings and Quality Assurance
Our services help clients save substantial amounts by preventing costly change orders during construction and lowering future maintenance and repair expenses. ALTA EI's thorough testing and inspection processes ensure that material specifications and sustainability goals are met efficiently.
Minimizing Material Issues
ALTA EI engineers work diligently with clients to minimize material replacements, reduce the likelihood of deterioration, and avoid potential failures. This proactive approach ensures the durability and reliability of materials used in construction projects.
Problem-Solving and Evaluation
When materials-related problems and failures do occur, ALTA EI provides thorough investigation and evaluation. This enables us to address and resolve issues efficiently, ensuring that the materials used meet the highest standards of performance and sustainability.
MATERIAL TESTING
SERVICES DETAILED
ALTA can provide a wide range of services during predesign and throughout construction by operating several materials testing laboratories under current industry standards. We can also mobilize to provide the materials testing you need, where you need it, when you need it. Once construction is underway, our extensive experience and innovative thinking allows us to help our clients deal with challenges in a practical, hands-on manner to keep their project on track. Services include:

Testing of Structural Soils
Field sampling and testing of structural soils used to support each site’s structural components generally involve a combination of laboratory analysis (e.g., proctor testing) and field observations (e.g., density and moisture testing based on the materials used, as well as verification of lift thickness, which is dependent on each project’s specifications).

Evaluation of Foundation Soils (Bearing Capacity)
Typically, our process involves observing, sampling, and testing both disturbed and undisturbed soils to determine their engineering properties related to bearing capacity and foundation support for proposed site improvements.

Asphalt Sampling, Testing, Monitoring and Coring
Compaction testing is typically utilized to aid in establishing rolling patterns, while monitoring material temperatures during placement is critical to a project’s success and ultimately a material thickness verification is performed on each element to confirm project specifications as met for infrastructure projects including roadways, driveways, and parking areas.

ACI Certified Sampling and Testing of Concrete
Sampling and testing of plastic concrete are completed to verify critical material properties such as unit weight, slump, air content, and temperature are typically performed at the time of placement at the project’s site.

Retaining Wall Monitoring and Certification
Retaining Wall Monitoring and Certification involves overseeing the construction of segmental retaining walls, including aspects such as drainage, geo-composite installation, material properties, and other critical factors. This process ensures that all construction practices meet certification standards for the wall and the structure performs as intended.

Quantification of Materials
The quantification of materials is used to determine quantities of borrow soils, unsuitable soil, stone, asphalt, rock, and other construction materials typically for payment verification or estimation purposes.

Soil Improvement and Evaluation
The soil improvement and evaluation process involves assessing the existing soil conditions and providing recommendations for remediation or suitability based on the project’s specific proposed improvements.

Material Mix Designs
Material mix designs are used to ascertain the necessary amounts of components such as aggregate, cement, lime, water, admixtures, and/or additives for construction material products based on their intended application. This include materials like aggregate base course, lime or cemented treated subgrade soils, concrete, grout, fireproof materials, structural steel and other building products.

Lime/Cement Stabilization
For projects which contain materials with relatively poor supporting characteristics, the existing materials can be improved with the addition of lime and/or cement. This process includes the preparation of laboratory mix designs and recommendations for chemical stabilization, which are tailored to actual site conditions and project specifications.
